GÜLE GÜLE
Word as Image in Space & Time
PROJECT 2 // SEPTEMBER 2024
Güle Güle, directly translating to 'Smiling Smiling' is a phrase often used in Turkey as a farewell to friends, family, and loved ones alike. As a daughter of an immigrant mother, the concept for GÜLE GÜLE reflects upon the intergeneration affects of diaspora and cultural belonging that is often found to be a product of immigration. This short film explores language as a tool for communication, identity, and nostalgia through a series of typographic compositions narrated by members of my family. Within these narrations contain childhood stories and personal re-tellings of life growing up as a first-generation immigrant in Australia.
